THE HERD - 2011 BUCKS AND DOES

Sales are done for the year, and I am pleased with my remaining herd of seven does and three bucks. I do not believe that a large herd is an advantage and have always kept my numbers around or below ten. This allows me to focus on and enjoy my animals. It was another successful sales year. Thank you to everyone who bought goats from me. I am so happy that I was able to find such nice homes for the kids and breeding stock I sold this year.

Babel Brook Acres TP Andante (Avian Acres WVL Selene x Dancing Angels Tempo)

"Danny" is on lease from Julie Shere. I will be using him on the majority of my does this fall. I fell in love with his dam, Selene at a show and was able to add her to my herd. Selene is wonderful in every way, and Danny is a beautiful blend of Selene and his sire, Tempo. I love his strength and his "bowling ball" escutcheon. He has a beautiful head with good width through the muzzle.

Dancing Angels RockStar (Dancing Angels Rockette x Promisedland RC Obama)

Barack is very striking, with moonspots and blue eyes! His dam is a longtime favorite of mine, and Barack seems to have more substance than his sire. He is very structurally correct under all that hair, and he should improve rear udders, capacity and production. I am pleased with the way he is developing and I look forward to seeing what he can produce.

Dancing Angels Silver Dollar (Dancing Angels GhostBuster x Promisedland RC Obama)

Dollar is a nice buckling out of one of my first fresheners. When he was born he had such a presence that I knew I wasn't going to be wethering him! He has many moonspots and gorgeous coloring, and I like his overall build also. He is a little immature at this point (Dollar's dam line is notoriously slow-maturing), so I will be holding onto him to see how he develops. If he is mature enough by breeding season I will use him on Rockette.

Dancing Angels GhostBuster (Dancing Angels Tempera x Shere Country TR Minstrel)

GB is one of last year's kids that I retained, and in the end I chose to keep her over her sister, Lovely. GB has never given me any trouble and she was a very good mom. She still has some maturing to do, but I like her very strong topline and overall appearance. I would like to see a little more width to her muzzle, which may come with maturity. GB has a beautiful fore udder and she has very nice, milkable teats for a first freshener. She will be bred to Danny.

Dancing Angels Rockette (Sugar Creek PT Show Girl x CH Dancing Angels Cool Your Jets)

Roxie is my only blue eyed doe and my best milker, and she has become very loving over the years. I adore her overall look and substance. She could be a bit sharper through the shoulders, but she crosses very well with a more refined buck. Roxie has a beautiful udder and her teat size is ideal. She requires very little grain and doesn't like to dry off, making her especially useful as a home milker. I hope to breed her to Dollar but if he can't manage she will be bred to Danny.

Avian Acres WVL Selene (Sugar Creek FR Wanda x Sugar Creek C Beau Weevil)

Selene is just wonderful. She has a super sweet personality, although she is "into everything" - such a goat! Her milkstand manners are just perfect and she is beautiful to look at too. I love her pretty but strong head, her depth of body and her nice, wide rump. Selene will be bred to Barack, and I am very excited to see what she can do when crossed with Roxie's lines.

Shere Country MP Bollywood (Dancing Angels Masquerade x TX Twincreeks WDF Megapixel)

I reserved Bollywood from Julie Shere. She is out of two animals I sold Julie, and Megapixel was one of the best bucks I ever had so I was very excited to add Bollywood. She is not people friendly but is getting better about being handled, and her structure is amazing. She is so dairy and close to ideal. The only thing I would like to improve slightly is her head. I plan to breed her to Danny.

Dancing Angels Summer (Dancing Angels Lovely x Promisedland RC Obama)

Summer is the one doeling I retained this year (it was a buck-heavy year for me). I had originally planned to sell her but she endeared herself to me so I let her sister go instead. Summer is very sweet and I love her soft buckskin coloring. She has sharp shoulders and a nice wide rump. I will probably breed her to Danny, possibly for fall 2012 kids.

Recently I had the opportunity to get one of my original herd matriarchs back. South Campus Temperance was one of the first does I acquired. She was originally sold to me because she was wild, but she did very well on my farm and produced well for me. She was a dedicated lead doe but I eventually sold her because she was a bit too aggressive with my other goats. Now she is eleven, and while she did fight and growl a lot when she was first re-introduced, she has settled in well. She is in great shape, apart from being a little arthritic and a lot smaller than I remember! I will try to breed her and see if she will settle, but either way she will retire to my farm. I enjoy having her back.

FINAL 2011 KIDS

After having six bucklings and only one doe born, I was really hoping for a nice doe kid from Obama to keep. My two first fresheners, full sisters Dancing Angels Lovely and Dancing Angels GhostBuster (Dancing Angels Tempera x Shere Country TR Minstrel) both came through with beautiful twins! It certainly made up for the buck-heavy year I'd been having.

Lovely was the first to kid on May 1st (my birthday!). She freshened with twin does.

Arrow is a very pretty, refined buckskin with white markings. She came into this world a little narrow but I think she has potential. She will be retained for now.

Summer is the more solid of the two, with more depth to her body at this point. I think she will turn out very nice but Arrow was my favorite of the two so Summer is sold.

GB followed up with gorgeous twins. She is a very attentive but laid-back mom, and her kids share her (and Obama's) nice disposition. I was really hoping for some interesting colors from this doe...

Copper Penny is a lovely soft chamoisee (?) doe kid. I am not sure if she is moonspotted, but she does have some interesting shading and she almost appears peach colored! She is a very solid little girl and she is growing on me every day. Penny is not for sale at this point.

Silver Dollar, GB's buckling is an absolute stunner. He impressed us right from birth and although he is a little guy his potential is impressive. He has quite the presence and is the type I like. He is also a sweetheart, and I love his dark buckskin coloring with moonspots and flashy white markings. He will be staying as my future herdsire.

TEMPERA'S KIDS

Last fall I bred my favorite doe Tempera to Dancing Angels Tempo for a linebreeding on South Campus Temperance. Tempera had a difficult birth but fortunately everyone is healthy and happy now. The breeding turned out extrememely well, and I will probably be repeating it this year and hoping for doe kids.

Dancing Angels Eli - white with buckskin buckling. Super sharp looking with an excellent hind end assembly. Really nice buck. He has already found a home as a herd sire.

My personal favorite this year, Dancing Angels Abe. White with gold buckling, smaller and more refined than his brother. Abe is an absolute love, and I think he has potential to make a good herd sire. I will be growing him out a bit more before making a decision on him.

KIDDING SEASON BEGINS!

Kidding season has begun with two births last Thursday, starting with a flashy black and white bucking with moonspots and blue eyes out of Dancing Angels Rockette and sired by Promisedland RC Obama. He is quite striking and appears to be very well conformed. He will be retained as a future herd sire.

Later that day we welcomed quadruplets out of Sugar Creek YO Blue Yoko (sired by Obama). This is her second set of quads in two years, and we suspected she was carrying a litter by her appearance prior to freshening:

The most exciting kid that resulted from this breeding is this heavily moonspotted buckskin buck. He is extremely colorful and well put together. I will be retaining him for now to see how he develops.

Another nice boy, this buckskin buck with white on his belly was the first born. He is very sweet and likes to pose. He is available as a wether.

The third buckling appeared black at birth but his moonspotting began to show up once he was dry and in good light. He is very flashy and striking to look at and is available as a wether.

Last but not least, this little dark buckskin doeling is petite and refined, but she has a huge personality and a whole lot of determination. She gets right in there with her brothers when it's time to nurse and makes sure to get her share. I will be holding onto her for now to see how she develops.

Dancing Angels Tempera (bred to Dancing Angels Tempo) is due to kid any day now, and we can't wait to see what she has.

FAREWELL LEDA

About a year and a half ago I(Meghan's mom)made the error of purchasing an obese Nigerian doe for her. We didn't know the animal was obese when we made arrangements with Irish Whisper Goat Farm to purchase her as we had only seen an older photo of her. Her bloodlines were very good, so I arranged to meet the owner down in lower Michigan to pick her up.

When we met in a parking lot I was on my way home. We had to park my truck tailgoate to tailgate to get Leda out of one crate and into ours, because she was too heavy for the two of us to lift...way too heavy. Folds of fat encased her entire body and she had blown out abdominal walls, broken down legs and feet and was unable to walk very well. I asked the woman "What have you been feeding her?" and she said, "Alfalfa hay and grain.". This was a dry animal and I don't know when she last freshened as we never could get the previous owner to return our calls with more information.

So I drove Leda home and we put her on a strict diet to take the fat off her. It took a several months for her to develop a healthy rumen and drop much of her exterior fat. And she eventually did get to the point where she could move with the herd and actually run short distances on occasion, but she was always problematic.

She bred and we anxiously awaited her kidding. She developed ketosis about two weeks before she was due and we pulled her through. Despite keeping watch on her as often as possible she managed to kid between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. one very cold night and I found both her kids lifeless and covered with shavings(appearing to have been laid upon). I managed to revive both kids with heat and numerous tube feedings. Leda delivered a partial placenta and acted odd but not sick. I checked and found the placenta near her cervical opening and felt things would progress. It turns out she had yet another larger kid dead in her that I failed to find which she partially delivered six days later. Once that kid was out she cleaned out well and never had a high fever or was off-feed.

We sent her to a friend's farm to graze and exercise for the summer and brought her home fit and sassy(but not fat)to breed yet again. Her kids were sold to a pet home, because the doe kid had an extra teat.

Leda went into heat and took on her first cycle. Unfortunately about a week ago she went off-feed and showed signs of labor and eventually aborted a single fetus. We had her on antibiotics and made sure she wasn't wormy, and she seemed to be doing much better until yesterday when she lost the use of one hindleg and then went down and couldn't use any of her legs. She wasn't eating, was shivering and shocky, so I put her down.

Meghan and I are both sorry we couldn't make things right for you Leda. And we hope sincerely that anyone who owns goats realizes that overfeeding them is just as abusive as not feeding them enough.

THE HERD IN FALL

Sugar Creek YO Blue Yoko is a recent purchase from Julie Shere in MN. She is a lovely Cou Clair doe with a very sweet personality. Yoko will be bred to Obama (she produced very colorful quads with him earlier this year) and I hope to use her as my main milker.

This is Sugar Creek PG Velleda Moth. Leda doe not have the most attractive physique due to a lifetime of multiple kiddings (as well as being morbidly obese for a time) but she is an excellent producer and is bred to Obama, who should complement her problem areas.

Dancing Angels Rockette (aka Roxie) is currently serving as my reluctant milker. She can be quite temperamental and sensitive, but she has been cooperating better since her doe kid left. Roxie has always been a heavy milker, reluctant to dry off, and she is also an easy keeper. Roxie is bred to Obama, and I think his refinement will complement her strength.

Dancing Angels Tempera is my a beautiful red and white doe out of one of my favorite does, Dancing Angels Temptation, whom I lost last year. Tempera has done a great job raising her twin doe kids and is still growing and starting to really mature. She is filling out and I think in a year or two she will be looking even better. Tempera will be bred to Dancing Angels Tempo for a linebreeding on Temptation and hopefully some red or gold kids.

Tempera's twins are pictured below. I am not sure about breeding them yet, although they are certainly growthy enough.

I took a brief 1200 mile roadtrip through Minnesota to exchange goats in Embarass, MN and pick up sheep in Perham and Mora. Meghan now has an extremely colorful(moonspots in all shades of gold and buckskin)buck named Promisedland Obama and a lovely cou clair doe--Sugarcreek Blue Yoko--in addition to her other keepers.

Obama will be bred back to Yoko(who produced colorful quads)her first kidding. He'll also be crossed with Dancing Angels Rockette and Sugarcreek Valeda Moth(gold and white doe). Dancing Angels Tempera will be bred to her half-brother Dancing Angels Tempo for a linebreeding on one of Meghan's all-time favorite does Dancing Angels Temptation.

We already have people on the list for kids, so if something spikes your interest please let us know in advance.

KIDDING HAS BEGUN

Bittersweet bred to Megapixel had twins Saturday at suppertime. The doe will be retained--black with white splashes everywhere. Her white with dark buckskin markings brother will be wethered and for sale for $60.00. His name is Wentworth.
Bittersweet is blue-eyed and always has blue-eyed kids. She will be for sale for $200 OBO after her kids are weaned. She is a small doe with a very nice overall look to her, but her udder isn't show quality. She has produced one doe to date with a socked-on udder. Her sire is CH/GCH Dancing Angels Cool Your Jets. Bittersweet is SOLD.
Apple had a single gold buck with a white cap on his head. He is a laugh a minute and would make a lovely pet wether, but we will be waiting to see just how he matures as he is linebred on Megapixel and could surprise us. Apple has a lovely long, uphill stance, nice legset and a socked on udder. $200 buck price/$60 wether price.SOLD. Apple(who is a granddaughter of Bittersweet)is staying in the herd.
Temptation(a daughter of CH South Campus Temperance and sired by Twincreeks WB Rain Beau)had a buck and doe that are colored like she is sired by Twincreeks PDF Megapixel. The buck will be kept intact and would make an awesome herdsire for someone. Times Roman is $200. His half-brother Dancing Angels Tempo already has two legs towards his CH. Temptation has a beautifully attached udder and nice overall look.

Roxie had an almost solid white buck with some dark markings who will be wethered and sold. Her doe kid is brown-eyed and white with black markings. She has a nice overall look to her and will be for sale for $250.00.SOLD. Roxie has an amazing udder and is sired by CH/GCH Dancing Angels Cool Your Jets and out of Sugar Creek Show Girl who is a full sister to GCH/CH Sugar Creek Show Tunes.

Virginia had a single buckling who is dark buckskin splashed heavily with white. He has potential as a future herdsire and will be kept intact for now. Virginia has a very nicely attached udder with good teat placement and is a standout first-time mom. She has been SOLD.

Pecan Sandie has twins--doe and buck. She has already been SOLD with her kids to a lovely beginner herd in the local area.
